Kurt Cobain died 10 years ago today. I was a senior in college. My roommate Kim and I watched a lot of MTV then. I remember Courtney's reading of his suicide note, cursing him out, telling her listeners to call him an asshole for killing himself. It was sad. I was sad.
10 years have passed. Dear Lord. If Kurt were alive today... If he could be a happy man who accepted who he was...
He wouldn't blip off the radar like Eddie Vedder seemed to do. Nirvana would have broken up. Courtney would have Yoko-ed that event. Dave Grohl would still form Foo Fighters. Kurt would show up on Foo Fighters' CDs as a special guest guitarist and singer. Nirvana would get back together after a few years to record an album. It would reflect how they've all grown. It would have a lighter tone than past Nirvana releases.
Kurt and Courtney would break up. They'd split and get back together a few times, but eventually they'd divorce. Then he'd hook up with some pop culture icon from the 80s, like Alyssa Milano. He'd tell people he never watched "Who's the Boss", but we'd know better. They'd be a really pretty couple.
Kurt would form his own record label. He'd help skater punks make music. He'd teach Frances Bean to play the guitar. He might even have his own grunge (hee, grunge!) "Making the Band". He could be the P. Diddy of the alternative rock scene. K. Daddy. There could be a clothing line. Maybe he'd even own a club in Seattle where new acts are discovered.
Whatever he would be doing, I hope he'd be admittedly happy with his fame.
