Remembering My Grandma

Img000000s

My Grandma Ettie passed away on Friday morning. She was 90. Her funeral was yesterday. I just ate chocolate pudding (with skin) that I cooked earlier in her honor. She used to make it for us grandchildren.

I used to like sitting with her, just sitting together, holding hands.

She was the shortest person I know, shorter than me. I loved it when I was growing up and she started to get shorter than me.

She was a really good cook. I liked her hamantaschen especially, her soup, and the aforementioned skin-topped pudding.

She was a wicked card player. I didn't play with her and my grandpa as often as my cousins or sister. I preferred it when she pulled out the Rummy-Q game.

She HATED Basher. Hated all dogs. They flocked to her like she had dog biscuits in her drawers. She'd tell Basher, "I like you, now go away!"

She was very proud, and she liked to be primped and proper. She never liked to have her picture taken if she didn't have on makeup, and she was still in her housecoat. It took her a long time to relent and start using a walker. She got her hair done often, and slept with that pink tape in it to hold it in place.

Toilettissue1She and my grandpa moved from the Bronx to Boca Raton in 1996. I remember a lot of things about her apartment in the Bronx, 11F. The weird dollar store Barbies with crocheted dresses that sat over her toilet paper rolls. Her cans of Aqua Net and rolls of pink tape for her cute bouffy hair.

The awesome, long table in her eat-in kitchen (it was a long room) with an equally long mirror on the wall above it. The china cabinet in the back corner that she kept locked. Every time she needed to pull dishes out of it, she'd have to unlock it. It's the one piece of furniture of hers that I didn't get in her move that I wish I had.

I could never figure out the lock to the terrace in that apartment!

Every time anyone visited, there were dishes of cashews, candy and halvah out.

She was very accepting of people and situations. A different little old Jewish lady may not have been so accepting of her 2 daughter-in-laws (she had 4) who aren't Jewish. But she was realistic, and told me "times are different than when I was a girl".

She took such good care of my grandpa. He died in September, 2005. She was an "old school" wife who stood by her man. Soon after his death, her health began to fail. She felt she had no purpose, and she was very lonely.

I love her so much. I saw her most recently on Mother's Day. She was very skinny and sad. I am so glad she got to meet Mason, and he was able to make her smile every time she saw him.

I walked with my cousins as pall bearers after the funeral service. We all walked beside the casket, with a hand on it as it was wheeled to the hearse. Holding the casket, I felt like I was holding her hand one last time.

Birthdays and a Video

Happy birthday Jackie! You are 27 years old today! Man, am I getting old, if you are 27! I hope you have a wonderful time celebrating your day!

Happy birthday Basher! We weren't sure when your actual birthday was, so we gave you Aunt Jackie's birthday! It's been about a year since you were born!

I've had a cold since Wednesday. I have no training news to report. So I'll just leave you with a funny link to a short video of Basher. She got a dose of Revolution between her shoulder blades five minutes before this was taken.

Parental Visitors

My mom and dad visited us this weekend. It was a sun filled (well, Saturday), food filled, rest filled weekend.

On Saturday, I had a swim/bike workout. My dad accompanied me to the gym and waited for me to finish swimming, and then we rode bikes to the boardwalk. It was fun to ride with him. Then we all went to the beach for three hours. There was napping and lunch and glorious weather. That night, my mom and I went to Jordan Lobster Farm to purchase a seafood feast that would last two nights. Shrimp, scallops, lobster tails, crab cakes, calamari salad, lobster pasta salad, and tomato/mozzarella salad. It was too much, even for 2 nights. There are a LOT of leftovers in the fridge!

On Sunday, my mom and I braved the crappy day traffic and went shopping. We looked at outdoor lights at Lowes and Home Depot Expo. I think nautical lamps (like below) in a darker shade would be cool on our beach house.

It was a fun visit. Drive home safely, parents!

Eat Better, Please

Hey daddy, this post is for you. I made you a special page. It's a Balanced Eating Daily Checklist. It's NOT a diet. It's a healthy way to eat every day. It follows the Food Guide Pyramid. I kept it very basic, so that you would be able to follow it. It gives you freedom to eat what you want and keep track yourself. It's not the "3-Day Diet" that tells you 3 days of ridiculous foods (melon and a hot dog?!? 7 saltines and dry tuna?!?)... It's just guidelines for you to follow. Love you and want you to be healthy!

If any of my readers have any additional comments, I'd love to hear them. I will change the page accordingly. Thank you!

Christmas Visiting

Merry Christmas!

Are you watching 24 hours of "Christmas Story", or the 50 Best "Saturday Night Live" episodes today?

We are in North Carolina now! We got here on Tuesday night. I love being here for the holidays. I am part of someone else's traditions now. We cook together in the kitchen, we wrap presents at the wrapping station, we open presents in a orderly manner (hee), we eat pistachios and peppermint bark, we talk about everything and anything, I nap a lot, we go for walks, we play with the dog... Thanks family for making this mine, too! I'm so happy to be here!

Chanukah Visitors

Happy Chanukah!

We had such a great visit with my parents. I wish we had more time, because my dad and Will worked so hard in the three days we had them. There was no rest for them. My mom and I worked hard cooking on Saturday, but we were much more leisurely the rest of the weekend than the men. We spent Monday shopping and walking in NYC.

As soon as I free the pictures from my digital camera, I can post the wonderful cubes that Will and my dad built. I mentioned them a little while back. They came out SO EFFING great. And they look so good with our new chair! Yay! They also built shelves in the office closet. It was good to get our books out of their boxes and on a shelf, alphabetical by author.

Will now has an awesome set of power tools. He's going to build me shelves in my closet with them. Yay!

I ate too many latkes. They were GOOD.

Come back and visit soon, please, mommy and daddy.

Parental Visitors, SOON!

My parents are driving up from Florida on Friday! I am SO excited! This is the first time they'll see our house! (Besides pictures!) I haven't seen them since September, when I surprised them with a visit. So I am totally excited. Did I say that already?!? Here's my cute family from that trip...

jackie, daddy, mommy and me!

I am having New York Day with my mom next Monday. She wants to see Regis and Kelly. I sent away for tickets, but never got any in return. So maybe we'll go in super early and try to get in standby! We have to get there before 7am. Oy. (I love Regis and Kelly... not too bright, but funny. Even funnier is the SNL Regis and Kelly skit.) I want to take her to Bridget's store in SoHo, where my jewels are being sold. Then we can walk up and down Broadway down there, where it's like the mall but outside. (Broadway in SoHo has become all big mall stores - which is good and bad. The little boutiques are really fun to shop in, but I'll take a Banana Republic or Aldo any day!) I'll have to figure out where to take her for lunch. Maybe we'll go to Katz's. I know she'll love that.

My dad will be too busy to come with us to NYC. We want him to build some shelves in a closet. We want him to help us make this cube.

functional and nice looking!

And I'm sure we have other things that he can do! So he won't be coming! He doesn't like NYC that much, anyway. I'll bring you back a pastrami sandwich, daddy!

Will's parents will come in January. Yay!
