Here's the Friday Five!
1. Who is your favorite singer/musician? Why?
Perry Farrell. Before I heard Jane's Addiction, the only non-pop music I listened to was my dad's old albums. The Beach Boys, Monkees, The Who... (Tommy is the best soundtrack of all time). When I went to college, the boys I hung out with loved JA, and it was like a whole new world of music for me.
2. What one singer/musician can you not stand? Why?
R. Kelly. I don't like his music. And the whole thing about him being a disgusting pig monster who can't keep it in his pants.
3. If your favorite singer wasn't in the music business, do you think you would still like him/her as a person?
Yes. I love to hear him in interviews. He's so weird, so effected by all the drugs he's done and the experiences he's had. Methinks he's an alien.
4. Have you been to any concerts? If yes, who put on the best show?
It's hard to say who puts on the best show. There are so many varieties... Madonna and Janet Jackson work their asses off to put on something that is energetic, arty, fun and nice to look at. Metallica (who I didn't like before I saw them live) put on a 2 hour set and loves the fans to death. They are all about the fans and put their hearts and souls into a show for them.
My favorite concert that I've been to is Billy Joel at MSG. It was December of '98, I think. He got on stage and said, "I haven't put out an album in a while. I'm just going to play old shit." And he did, and it was awesome.
5. What are your thoughts on downloading free music online vs. purchasing albums? Do you feel the RIAA is right in its pursuit to stop people from downloading free music?
I'm not against downloading free music. I think file sharing is a great invention. I don't do it, though. I don't like having other people taking things from my computer. I feel violated and I shut down the software before files are transferred. (sorry, I know that's bratty!). There is nothing like the real thing, anyway. Buying a CD with the band's pictures and liner notes and lyrics... Nothing beats that. That will always keep me shopping for CDs in music stores.
I think the RIAA is justified in its pursuit. People are getting music and not paying for it.
